The old Cathedral of San Pantaleo rappresents an unique
example of Sardinian-Romanic architectonic building, it was born
from many architectonic contaminations and decorations.
This romanic structure was made on an old byzantine settlement,
where we have found a religious christening font, and many others
fragments of architecture elements. The first section of the cathedral was
documentated in 1170 on an inscription from the south side to the façade.
The restarting of the works in 1261 and the ending in 1289 were documented
with other inscriptions engraved on the architectonic elements of
the north portal, and on the painting of the half-cylinder apsidal, that
celebrate
the consecration of the temple with the presence of judge Mariano
II d’Arborea.
Edified with local sandstones, the building has the apse orientated to
the south-east, and you can notice this, when you reach the nice restored
parvis.
In the interior of the building, you can see many paintings on the apsidal
area, the more important painting is the “Arbor Vitae” on the
south
nave attributed to Simone de’Crocifissi, a Bolognese artist that lived
in
the ‘300 century.
Others artistic piece of art is the nice retable dated around 1503.
Placed to the south wall, on the left side of the “Arbor vitae”,
the double
triptych caracterised by brilliant colours, painted by tempera colours, represents
scenes of life and marthyr of San Pantaleo, and an unusual “
Virgin Mary of the book” that represent the high quality work.
